Onwards Forever

My days at Gulmohur began with days when i could hardly sing the school song(i did not learn it for how many days i don't know), the days when Caesar sir used to play his guitar sashaying all across the assembly ground in the primary section, the days when i found myself a fish out of water in the school. I was a new student admitted in class 2, and was totally clueless about everything that happened around me, with me, without me.
Overcoming all apprehensions, i finally confessed to my class teacher, Mrs Lal. And that was the moment that made Gulmohur MINE. Things changed, i became so comfortable with everything at GHS. The warmth was so unparalleled, the school didn't bite ever from thereon.
The love for the school and the teachers shall never die. The teachers were remarkably helpful and very compassionate. The quality of education is undoubtedly amongst the best offered in the country. Being a Gulmohurian makes me feel proud and lucky. The school has instilled the values, delivered knowledge and done everything that other best schools do. What i feel separates GHS from any other school in the country is the amount of freedom we were given. I never felt bounded by any means. The environment is so much perfect for anyone to learn right from the books to the lessons of life. I really yearn to live in the same atmosphere once again, back in my alma mater, the OLD STRONG DAME that taught me to move forward with penchant for perfection. Its a Utopia offering a gamut of rare options- Exploring life, being adventurous, Never being afraid of making mistakes, never fearing failure. Failure indeed can be a stepping stone to success at this magical place. It strengthens us when we fail.
truly Gulmohur, yo have taught all your children to move Onwards Forever..Onwards..

Nostalgia is deep entrenched in thy name,
Wish you loyalty, love, fortitude and fame..
My love for Gulmohur shall never fade,
Thy diadem shall be adorned with pearl and jade...

Give me some sunshine, Give me some rain

A giant leap backwards in time.Yeah ,early eighties.Beginning of a new era.Gulmohur was still shaping itself .The then principal wing commander Sunandan Roy had decided the school should venture outside the school campus.I remember we had gone to goulmuri club.Mrs.Rekha Maslamania preety lady who was the member of the managing committee had taken us there for a orientation into the world beyond school. There we interacted for the first time with other prominent schools of Jamshedpur. We discussed various topics related with youth.Came back to school and presented a written report about our interaction. It was a very self developing phenomena.Sacred heart convent{my previous school}had visited ghs and it was a very interactive session. That was our first step to become a member of interact club.Well it included lot of interaction between different schools and different people. The result was we became very confident and could synergies with any one on the globe with style and conviction.

School Website Launched

Just got a note from Abhijit that the school site has been launched.....
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Launch was a big hit. It was a sort of "Muharat" of a film.

• All teachers were seated in the computer lab.
• Some Alumni joined me too.
• Principal entered with the Managing committee members.
• The chairman cracked coconut and then burned incense sticks :-)
• After that Principal delivered speech, then I delivered, which followed by the Chairman inaugurating the site.
• There were people from press too.

The whole project was being praised. They were attracted by the look of the website (comments like "Looks very professional site" etc). Whole AAG website team was being thanked for the same.

So overall it was a huge success.
Thanx to all of you, without whose help the project was just a dream. You made it come true...Cheers!!
-----Text of Abhijit's Speech ------------------

It is indeed my proud privilege to welcome you all at the launch of our school portal gulmohurschool.org. I would like to thank our Principal for giving us the opportunity to design the Gulmohur High school website.

The project is the result of the dedicated effort of AAG website team. I would like to thank Mr. Ashok Nayak, Tanmoy Bhadra, Naveen Dutta, Nishant Prasad, T.S. Prakash of the core team. Sumonto Ghosh, Debjit Biswas, Saurabh Sharda and Kamran Ahmad deserve a special mention. Thanks also to all the members of AAG as the project would not have been possible without you . A sincere note of appreciation and thanks to everyone who was involved in making this possible.

Gulmohur High School is entering into an era of internet enabled learning with the launch of its own portal. The website will serve the school in promoting Value –based learning with the help of latest technology. This portal will serve as an extension and a step towards blended learning environment to help the students learn and network together. Our plan is to bring the parents, teachers, students, school principal and Alumni community together as one.

The website has features which include:

1) Unique username and password for Teachers and students to log in to the website.
2) A School blog.
3) Learning Management system which is the next step into modern learning methods.
4) A direct feedback form using which you can voice your opinions to the school principal.
5) A networking site where the Alumni can come and find old friends and buddies.

We are also looking forward to come up with the ability for a parent to view reports of his child's progress online, online quizzes, online study modules and lots more. This website launch is just one step in that direction.

Thank you..

My School

Entry to this world starts with watery eyes, hands clasped around a protective figure pleading to take them away. When it ends eyes are still watery, hands are still watery, hands are still clasped, its still pleading but to take them back.

This world, an institution which made me equipped enough to write this piece. 56 years of existence of one of the oldest schools in town and it’s still going strong. A hotspot of talent, which right now are making their alma mater proud at every corner of this world.

Some fondest memories of life has been those 13 years spend in this hallowed institution. Doing homework getting punished, standing in the corridor for not doing homework and being watched by juniors, fearing parent’s anger during parent teacher meetings, those romantic linkups( some did blossomed into healthy relationship), bunking classes, those batches, the feeling of being a captain or a prefect(Oh! What a feeling, the school seemed to be our own).

Would like to share an incident with you all which happened when I was in class eleven.

I had just participated in my first inter school event and we had come out as the best school (thanks to my partner and the participating schools. I was happy. Two more debates were given to me, the third followed. I was elated. But all of them were on the same day. Hmmm, that was tough. I became nervous. How could I handle, with two happening only one hour apart? Anxiety was running high. Was going to call a quit to one of those.

The Principal called me in. She said, “Believe in yourself, believe in what you speak. The whole school believes in your commitment and capability.”

We brought in two best school shield and a best speaker. The next day in school a dream came true.

Come and share your experiences, your ideas. Connect with each other.

School Song

The lyrics of the Gulmohur High School song are:

Onwards Forever Onwards
Strengthen us when we fail
Virtue and Knowledge our motto be
O Hail Gulmohur Hail to thee

We love to sing of Gulmohur School
Our Noble Alma Matar
Amongst the rest she is the best
And none can be ever greater

The ties that bind us to our School
No one can ever sever
And we will be true to Gulmohur School
Gulmohur Gulmohur Forever

I do not know the background of the song but I believe it was the brain child of late Principal Mr. B.R. Das. At our school reunion (1986 ICSE batch) around Christmas last year (2009) I found myself singing this song along with my batch mates. It was an emotional moment as we stood in a semi circle at tube makers club in Jamshedpur singing this song and it felt like we were back in school. To an outsider the sight would have been quite comical to see a bunch of 40 year olds singing their school anthem at the top of their voices but it was a lot of fun. We met over a period of 3 days and it almost appeared that time had stood still.

Looking Back

When I look back at the school where I spent my formative years I have a lot of good memories. My association with Gulmohur School goes back to when the primary section of the school was called Shishu Vidyalaya and had classes up to grade 3.

I started in Lower KG and when in grade 3 learnt that Gulmohur school would merge with Shishu Vidyalaya and Shishu Vidyalaya will become Gulmohur Primary School. This was in 1979. I graduated from Gulmohur High School in 1986 and 24 years later remember the school very fondly.

When I think back about the teachers what I remember is the love, caring and selfless sacrifices. Some of the teachers have since retired, moved on to do different things and some have passed away but their legacy remain in my heart and guide me like a beacon of light.

I have tried to put together the activities that I feel were good practices when I was in school and also listed activities which perhaps should be added if not already present. Also ensuring that all students participate is the key. Back then as is possibly today there would be students who would participate and others who shy away. If the educators made the effort to ensure that everyone participates it will ensure that a solid well rounded person graduate from the school which really is the goal of a high school.
